History of the Chicago-Style Hot Dog

The Chicago-Style hot dog was introduced in 1893 at the World’s Columbian Exhibition by two young Austria-Hungarian immigrants who brought their frankfurter recipe from Vienna to the United States and founded the Vienna Sausage Manufacturing Company.

During the Great depression, street cart vendors peddled Chicago-style Vienna Beef hot dogs, also known as “salad dogs”, to hungry Chicagoans, providing struggling Americans a hearty meal in a bun for only a nickel. Over 115 years since their arrival in Chicago, “Vienna Beef” and “Chicago-Style” are broadly recognized and are favorites throughout Chicagoland and in cities and towns across the U.S., Europe and Asia.
